"Three Fundamentals" to assess the engine oil during low temperature performance

There are many problems that can be encountered when running a vehicle during the winter. Among of which, the performance of engine oil at low temperature should be more paid attention to. The four parameters used to evaluate the performance of engine oil at low temperature are pour point (D97), low-Temperature cranking viscosity (D5293), low-temperature pumping viscosity (D4684), and Gelation Index (D5133).


In SAE J300, there are clear requirements for low-Temperature cranking viscosity and low-temperature pumping viscosity, while ASTM D4485 has clear requirements for the Gelation Index of engine oil. It is vital to test the low-Temperature cranking viscosity (CCS), low temperature pumping viscosity (MRV) and Gelation Index for the oil products' low temperature performance. The low-Temperature pumping viscosity and Gelation index are both tests to evaluate the low-Temperature pumping capacity of engine oil.


The pump failure is manifested as "flow restriction" and "air entryway". The low-temperature pumping viscosity (MRV) is mainly judged from the consideration of "flow restriction". "Flow restriction" is that the pump cannot feed oil into the engine due to poor oil fluidity. While gelation index to evaluate from the air entrainment, "air entrainment" for the engine oil at low temperature part of gel formation, the oil pump pumping oil, oil cannot be added in time, around the oil pump inlet took shape, form a hole, air into the pump inlet air entrainment, forming gas abrasion damage.
